Ted wth Trophies 2012Ted Haley – CCCRC Head Coach and STA Head Coach

 Ted started rowing in 1983 at Canisius High School in Buffalo, NY. In 1985, as a high school junior, his boat won the Junior 4+ titles at both the U.S. Scholastic Nationals and the Canadian Scholastic Nationals. In his senior year, his 4+ boat finished first at the U.S. Scholastic Nationals and third at the Canadian Scholastic Nationals. That same year, his boat represented the USA as the Junior National 4-.In 2006 Ted was inducted into the Canisius High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1988 and again in 1989, during his sophomore and junior years at Georgetown University, his Varsity Lightweight 8+ placed first at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. In 1989, he was named MVP of his Lightweight team. That summer, he rowed for the West Side Rowing Club in an Intermediate Lightweight 8+ boat that finished first at the Canadian Henley. He was captain of Georgetown’s crew team in his senior year. Ted has been STA’s Head Coach since the team was started in 1993. His team’s many accomplishments can be found on the Team Accomplishments page. 2011 was an exceptional year for the St. Albans crews. The Senior 8 won the Stotesbury Cup and the 2nd and Freshman 8’s got silver medals at that regatta.Coach Haley has been named All-Met Coach of the Year by the Washington Post in 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2011. He has worked at the well-known Craftsbury Sculling Center. He has also coached many summers at Thompson’s Boat Club, where his Boys’ Junior 8+ boats have won three U. S. Rowing Nationals titles, in 1999, 2002 and 2005. Ted also works as a Lower School guidance counselor, Lower School hockey coach and teacher at STA. He lives in Arlington with his wife and two daughters. 

Greg King - NCS Varsity Coach

greg and max crew coachGreg started coxing at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware in 1997. During his time at SAS he was also a varsity cross country runner, varsity wrestler and team captain. Afterwards, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and majored in English Literature. During his three years on the team at UW, Greg lost only one race. His noteworthy achievements included two San Diego Crew Classic Championships, two Windermere Cups, three Pac-10 Championships, one Silver and two Gold Medals at the IRA National Championships. Following college, Greg coached at Sammamish Rowing Association near SeattleWashington. His first year as novice boys coach his boys placed third at the Northwest Regional Championships. The following year, as assistant coach, he helped SRA qualify the first Lightweight Eight from the program for the Youth National Invite, and became Boathouse Manager for the club. The next year as head coach, he led the team to its first gold medal at NW Regionals in the boys Varsity Eight in program history. That year they also won the boy’s Varsity Quad, boy’s Varsity Four, and boy’s Novice Eight. Each successive year, Greg helped SRA qualify more boats for the USRowing Youth National Invite, and won the Brentwood Regatta Points Championship two years in a row. Greg also coached Junior B aged rowers (16 & under) in the summers in Seattle, and his crews medaled in the Junior B Double, Junior B Quad and Junior B Eight two years in a row at USRowing Club Nationals. He also coached a number of Masters rowers, leading them to gold medals in the Men’s four and Women’s pair at USRowing Masters Nationals. In 2010, Greg coxed the TBC open women’s four at the Head of the Charles that posted the fastest time in the category. Last year at NCS, his group of determined freshmen girls became Ted Phoenix Regatta Freshmen Champions and were Stotesbury Finalists. Greg Is very excited to be returning to NCS this year, and Max is ready to get back in the launch. Greg also works as a substitute teacher and hopes to be in grad school within the year.

Sal Assenza - STA Assistant Coach

Sal and Ted HeadshotsSal began his rowing career in 1993 as a freshman at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, New York. While at FDR, Coach Assenza won back-to-back New York State Championships in 1995 and 1996. He then stroked the crew to an American Rowing Championships the following summer.

While attending George Washington as an undergraduate, Coach Assenza stroked the freshmen eight to a 16th place finish at the IRA regatta. As a senior, Coach Assenza’s crew took second place in the Varsity 4 event at the IRA. After college, Coach Assenza rowed for the New York Athletic Club where he sat in the stroke seat of their Intermediate and Senior eight championship boats.  Coach Assenza served as the graduate assistant for Scott Sanford’s Marist College crew while getting his Master’s in Education.

Coach Assenza worked with the Walt Whitman Rowing team for seven seasons. After two seasons with the freshmen and one with the varsity lightweights, he coached the first and second varsities for four years. In 2006, Coach Assenza’s varsity eight won the National Capitol Championships for the first time in school history. He was awarded the Washington Post Coach of the Year in Rowing in the same year. Following the 2006 academic year, Coach Assenza co-coached Thompson Boat Center Junior Boys to a US Rowing Championship in the 8+ and 4+ events.

During the school day, Sal works at Thomas Wootton High School as an AP Psychology teacher. He also works with St. Alban’s Summer as a psychology and study skills teacher. 

Jennifer Kleitsch - NCS Assistant Coach

Jennifer Kleitsch NCS Coach

NCS is pleased to welcome Coach Jennifer Kleitsch as our Assistant Girls Coach. Jennifer brings her enthusiasm, determination and positive attitude to NCS each and every day.  She will teach the girls valuable goal-oriented lessons on and off the water. Coach Jennifer brings strength and resolve as well as a no-nonsense New York state of mind. A former graduate of St. Anthony's High School, Coach Jennifer participated as a member of the St. Anthony Crew Team for four years. During her career at St. Anthony's, she received second place at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. In addition, she achieved top honors and placements at New York and New Jersey State Championships as well as reaching the semi-finals at the Stotesbury Cup and SRA National competitions. Her prior coaching experience includes providing assistance to the coaching staff of the Catholic University Crew Team, as well as being the Head Women’s Coach at St. Anthony’s last year. Coach Jennifer specialized in creating workouts tailored for the women's crew team and helped rowers develop and master proper rowing technique. She graduated from Loyola University with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. 


Heather Barney - NCS Freshman Coach

Heather Barney NCS Coach HeadshotHeather started rowing as a freshman at Williams College in 1997. During her time as an Eph oarswoman, she served as captain, won two New England Championships, competed twice at the NCAA Championships, and rowed bow seat in the fastest Division III crew in the country.

After college, Heather spent four years training with Potomac Boat Club's open sculling program before returning to Williams to start her coaching career. She helped the Ephs to two NCAA Division III National Championships, and coached crews to multiple medals at the New England Championships and the ECAC National Invitational.

Most recently, Heather was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgetown University, where over four years she helped, the Hoyas climb from 7th to 2nd in the Big East Conference, and coached crews to medals at the Head of the Occoquan, the Jesuit Invitational, the Big East Conference Championships, and the EAWRC Sprints. She was part of the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009, and was a three-time Regional Assistant Coach of the Year nominee.

In addition to coaching the NCS freshman, Heather works with Potomac Boat Club's elite sculling group, and is earning her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration.

Lee Rumpf - STA Freshman Coach

Lee STA Crew CoachLee started his rowing career at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2004. There he earned 4 Stotesbury medals, winning the Varsity 8 event in both 2006 and 2007. He also raced for TBC on the Potomac and earned them 2 national championships in the Junior 8 Category. Before concluding his high school rowing experience he raced at the Royal Henley Regatta on the Thames in England, making it to the quarterfinals. 
 
Lee went on to attend the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a Degree in Political Science after rowing for 2 years. His coaches have included Ted Haley, Sal Assenza, Jim Granger (FIT head coach), Geoff Bond, Mike Teti (US National team coach), and Steve Gladstone(Yale head coach). 
 
Excited and motivated, Lee looks forward to this season at St. Alban's and brings the unique perspective of a two time Stotesbury winner. He says, "Success breeds success, and I am happy to have the opportunity to introduce the next class of St. Alban's men to this successful program".
